What's the difference between socket AM2 and 939?

Looks like AM2 is pretty spendy... I just compared newegg specs, same voltage, same 90nm, bla bla bla. What's the diff?

Futureproof. When AMD comes out with there new line of cpu's someday, it will be AM2. Also, you get to use ddr2 with am2.

Be careful if your looking at prossesors... They dont carry the 3800 dual core. I thought the 4200 was it for the longest time and couldn't figure out why it was so pricy =P But if you were planning a 939 system for a set price you can probably find the same thing with AM2 at a few bucks more.

If anyone is lookin for a cheep 3800+ heres one for about $300 with shiping...

And yea roboto beat me to it... It will last a lot longer if you ever need to upgrade and it uses ddr2. So its a smart idea to go with AM2 for a few bucks more incase you ever need to upgrade. Buying a 939 is like buying out of date software sorta =P

I suppose I could just browse newegg, but how is the motherboard selection at this point? I'll probably still wait for a few months before I start building anew, but I like to keep up on stuff. When I have more time, I'll hit the Tom'sHardware and Anandtech and etc and so forth and junk and stuff.

Its not bad... Like I said im building a new system as well and im going with AM2. The mobo I think ill be going with is this...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813138026

I hear it has a great bios and its realy easy to learn to OC on. I would like to someday overclock my stuff once the warenties expire and it starts getting slow with the future software. I hear its a good motherboard and boistar is a decent brand. But look around on newegg for ideas on what there is. Im not sure what your price range is so I cant reay tell what your looking for.
