Dell XP OS disc only work with Dell machines?
I was told that my Dell copy of XP would only work in Dell machines for years...I was just recently told it'll load on any machine.
Which is true?

If it states OEM on the disk then it is likely that you will not be able to use it on any machines other than Dells.
cheers ...

That's what I thought...and that's the larger of the two sides I see. Thanks!

You are welcome. If the licence on your Compaq is not OEM (it would say so on the label) you might be able to transfer it to the new machine with a call-in activation.

lol I was actually told I would need to call in and tell them my drive crashed and I'm reloading...it all seems like too big a hassle. Half the people that I talk to, despite their praise that XP is still the best, say that Ms's support for the system is about to vanish. So I'll just run with the x64 Vista I can get for free and maybe upgrade to 7 later.

Calling in is never a hassle, really. But it is a good move of your part to consider Vista and then Windows 7.
cheers ...

I only consider Vista because I won't have to pay for it lol. If I had to buy one...I'd buy 7.
